Everyone loves sidewalks, but they’re enormously expensive. So are there other ways to create safe pedestrian passageways besides sidewalks? Yes! A group of Lake City neighbors is working in conjunction with Seattle Greenways to do just that here in Lake City.
Join their kick-off meeting Wednesday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Kaffeeklatsch. Or look for info at the Pioneer Days Festival this Saturday, August 4th. Want to be added to the Lake City Greenways Project email list? Contact Janine at blaeloch@gmail.com, or find them on Facebook.
SO WHAT ARE GREENWAYS?
Seattle City Council Member Sally Bagshaw, a proponent of greenways, gives this explanation on her blog: “Neighborhood Greenways are dedicated residential streets with low traffic volume and traffic speeds. The street is an extended connection between parks or schools or neighborhood businesses. The connection provides a quieter, slower paced place where bicycles, pedestrians and neighbors’ safety are given priority.” (Read Bagshaw’s full post here.)
For those of you involved with local schools, greenways projects dovetail nicely with the Safe Routes to Schools program.
